Reporting Structure

Report To: Pharmacy Manager

Supervision: None

Job Requirements

Job Level: Intermidiate Level

Gender: Both

Experience: 2 Years

Main Duties

  • Dispense ophthalmic medications accurately according to prescriptions issued by authorized clinicians.
  • Counsel patients on the proper use of eye medications, including eye drops, ointments, and oral medications.
  • Demonstrate correct eye drop instillation techniques to patients and caregivers.
  • Explain dosage, storage requirements, potential side effects, and treatment adherence.
  • Verify prescriptions for completeness and clarify any discrepancies with prescribers.
  • Prepare, label, and package medications in accordance with established standards.
  • Maintain accurate medication records and dispensing registers.
  • Monitor medication expiry dates and ensure timely removal of expired products.
  • Ensure proper storage conditions for all pharmaceuticals, including temperature-sensitive medications.
  • Monitor stock levels of medicines and consumables.
  • Prepare purchase requests and participate in stock forecasting.
  • Receive, inspect, and record pharmaceutical deliveries.
  • Conduct routine stock counts and reconcile inventory records.
  • Minimize stock losses through proper inventory management.
  • Ensure compliance with Tanzania Medicines and Medical Devices Authority (TMDA), Pharmacy Council, and Ministry of Health regulations.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the pharmacy.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Report medication errors, adverse drug reactions, and near misses.
  • Support ophthalmologists, optometrists, and nurses by ensuring timely availability of medications.
  • Assist in preparing medications for theatre procedures and minor surgical interventions.
  • Ensure emergency medicines are adequately stocked and readily available.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary patient care activities.
  • Maintain accurate dispensing records and inventory reports.
  • Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly pharmacy reports.
  • Assist in maintaining patient confidentiality in accordance with hospital policies.
  • Adhere to infection prevention and control protocols.
  • Ensure safe handling and disposal of pharmaceutical waste.
  • Maintain workplace safety standards.
  • Participate in continuing professional development (CPD).
  • Attend departmental meetings and training sessions.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Pharmacy Manager or Hospital Management

Other Requirements

  • Diploma in Pharmaceutical Sciences or Pharmaceutical Technology from a recognized institution.
  • Registered with the Pharmacy Council of Tanzania with a valid practicing licence.
  • At least 2 years of experience in an eye hospital or specialist healthcare facility is an added advantage.
