PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:
To assist in collection of relevant geotechnical data required for stope and development geotechnical design recommendations for the assigned underground mine(s).
QUALIFICATIONS:
- An undergraduate degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology, Geology, or a closely related field.
EXPERIENCE:
- A Minimum of 2 – 3 years of geotechnical or engineering geology experience in underground mining environments.
• The incumbent must have basic working knowledge of geotechnical data gathering, analysis, interpretation, modelling, design and quality assurance techniques and must be able to perform assigned tasks under supervision.
MAIN OR KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Underground Geotechnical Data Collection.
• Assist in undertaking underground geotechnical data in a timely manner from various sources and ensuring that the collected data meets the required quality standard.
Geotechnical Modelling.
• Assist to undertake data validation for all collected geotechnical data prior to analysis.
Stope and Ore Development Evaluation.
• Assist to undertake stope stability assessment using recommended techniques nor methodologies.
Underground Support and Fall of Ground Risk Mitigation.
• Undertaking Planned Task Observation of ground support installation.
• Assist to undertake assessment of the risk posed by poor ground conditions and presence of adverse geological structures to the working levels.
Underground Excavation Monitoring
• Assist in conducting underground inspections, ensuring ground control management programmes are in place and maintained in line with geotechnical best practice and standard.
Safety
• Learn and follow safety requirements related to your work.
• Consider what could go wrong and what needs to be done to work safely before starting a task.
• Speak up if you think a task cannot be done safely.
• Continually look for new hazards in the workplace and report them to your supervisor.
• Talk to your supervisor when you are not fit for work.
• Suggest ways to improve Safety performance.
• Promptly report all injuries, illnesses, and incidents
• Help others to work safely.

• Advanced understanding and application of Geotechnical Data Collection methodologies
• Advanced understanding and application of rock mass classification and data reduction/analysis
• Advanced understanding and application of Geotechnical Risk Management
• Advanced understanding of Soil and Rock Testing and Analysis techniques
• Good understanding and application of Underground Mining Methods, Layout and Sequencing
• Good understanding and application of Rock Mass Monitoring techniques
• Good understanding and application of Ground Support Design techniques
• Good understanding and application of Underground Mine Ground Control methodologies
• Basic understanding of hydrogeological investigation and dewatering techniques
• Basic understanding of underground production drilling and blasting techniques
• Basic understanding and application of Investigation techniques for Failures, Incidents and Accidents
