Title: Student Support and Mentorship Coordinator
Supervisor: Senior Technical Advisor (STA)
Location: ESP Field Office – Dar Es Salaam

Background
Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) is implementing the Empowerment through Skills Program (ESP) in Tanzania in close collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST) through the Department of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (DTVET).

The Empowerment through Skills Program is a 7-year (2021-2028) program funded by the Government of Canada which will support the development and delivery of skills training programs that benefit women and adolescent girls working in the informal and formal economies throughout the country. By providing community-based and institution-based training programs at Folk Development Colleges (FDCs) and Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) across 12 regions in Tanzania, and by strengthening the financial, counselling, and family support systems women need to be successful in key growth sectors that lead to social and economic empowerment.

Job Summary
General Expectations
The Student Support and Mentorship Coordinator will be responsible for supporting general program activities and specifically coordinating effective and efficient support for FDC students enrolled in ESP—FDC short courses through a mentorship program.
The Student Support and Mentorship Coordinator will work under the direction of the STA to support and liaise with the FDCs in the development and implementation of a mentorship program, including mentoring and capacity strengthening of FDC staff. The coordinator is also expected to work closely with all other Tanzanian- and Canadian-based program teams.
The position is expected to involve considerable travel within Tanzania.

Responsibilities
• Working with the STA, design the structure and mechanism of the mentorship program for implementation at the FDCs.
• Provide guidance to FDCs and their staff on how to incorporate a mentorship program into their student support services to ensure a positive and successful student enrolment, retention, and graduation.
• Lead and capacitate the FDC staff responsible for student support services on how to:
• Recruit mentors who can provide valuable guidance and support to mentee students, i.e., enrolled in ESP-FDC short courses.
• Develop and implement comprehensive orientation or training programs to prepare mentors for their roles with mentee students.
• Coordinate industry “exposure” visits, including liaising with employers and matching students to appropriate opportunities.
• Match mentors with mentee students based on their skills, interests, and career goals.
• Provide ongoing support to mentors, including regular check-ins and resources to help them in their mentoring roles.
• Organize events and activities to foster strong mentor-mentee student relationships.
• Provide support to matrons on how to support students on academic and personal matters.
• Regularly assess the effectiveness of the mentorship program and gather feedback from mentors and mentee students.
• Analyze data, provide recommendations for improvements and implement best practices to enhance the mentoring experience.
• Manage project activities related to mentorship, ensuring they are completed on time and within budget.
• Develop and maintain project activity plans, timelines, and budgets.
• Prepare and present reports on FDCs student support services, industry networks, and mentorship programs.
• Support, liaise with, and collaborate with the Program Support Coordinators and Canadian college partners to achieve their partnership work plans.
• Collaborate with the Department of TVET, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MOEST) and other stakeholders.
• Support the overall implementation of the program.
• Participate in ESP committees and sub-committees and meetings, as required.
• Provide data and reports as required by CICan and Global Affairs Canada.
• Respond to enquiries from program partners and external agencies.
• Respond to requests from the ESP staff in Ottawa.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Reporting
The employee will report to and be supervised by the Senior Technical Advisor or designate in the ESP Field Office, in close collaboration with the Ottawa-based Manager of Operations. The employee is expected to work with a high degree of independence and autonomy.

Qualifications and Competencies
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in gender studies, counselling, social work, development, or a related field.
• At least five years of professional experience in a similar role with international organizations working on donor funded youth programs in economic development or education, ideally in the TVET sector.
• At least five years of experience in student support or mentorship programs.
• Previous demonstrable experience promoting gender equality and empowering women and girls.
• Superior written and verbal English and Swahili communication skills, along with the ability to effectively present and clarify requirements, expectations, ideas, and concepts to various audiences/stakeholders.
• Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
• Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and disseminate significant amounts of information.
• Experience working with Government Ministries at national and regional levels
• Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team.
• Proficiency in MS Office Suite and experience with data management and reporting.
• Tanzanian citizen or legally permitted to work in Tanzania. Note: CICan will not provide a work permit or sponsor individuals.
